Signs of Stroke

To remember the signs of stroke more easily, remember the acronym FAST.

  • Is the Face drooping?
  • Are both Arms raised?
  • Is the Speech slurred or jumbled?
  • It is Time to contact 911 immediately.

These signs are the most common indications of a stroke. The possibility is higher for it to be a stroke compared to other conditions.

Here are other but less common signs of stroke:

  • Blurred, double-vision, or other changes in your vision
  • Balancing problems
  • Numbness often on 1 side of your body
  • Severe and sudden headache

Stroke patients will not have all the signs. However, if any of the FAST signs are seen, calling 911 should be done right away.

FAST signs apply to all kinds of strokes, even though there can be some differences in signs for each type. For instance, when someone experiences a hemorrhagic stroke, FAST signs and severe headaches may be experienced. For TIA, the signs may be experienced briefly.

Whatever the case, it is best to call 911 right away to provide proper acute stroke care. Though the awareness of doctors and paramedics about FAST signs varies, a lot of progress has been made in the stroke care system in Canada. For instance, Canadian paramedics are provided with stroke training.
